Polymer monolayer polyvinyl chloride films are commonly used in less demanding applications such as small tablets and superficial tablets. The copolymer grade PVDC is recommended for more demanding applications such as large tablets (Drugs with high moisture absorption).

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) are used in pharmaceuticals as primary packaging materials to protect pharmaceuticals from oxygen and odor permeation, moisture, water vapor transmission and microbial attack.
Rigid PVC is a very clear, rigid material with a low WVTR. It exhibits excellent thermoformability; high flexural strength; good chemical resistance; low permeability to oils, fats, and flavoring ingredients; easy printing; and low cost. These properties make rigid PVC the material of choice for blister packaging, which essentially owns 100% of the market for plastic components. In order to overcome the lack of barrier properties of PVC film, it can be coated with PVDC or laminated with PCTFE or COC to increase the protective properties.
Polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) coated PVC. PVDC coatings have been used with two-phase (PVDC/PVC), while three-phase (PVDC/PE/PVC) constructions are the most commonly used. About 67% of the barrier blister packaging market uses these PVDC coated films. PVDC provides an excellent barrier to oxygen and water vapor, while most other barrier polymers offer only one of these. PVDC can reduce the gas and moisture permeability of PVC blister packs by a factor of 5-10. Gas barrier properties are not affected by relative humidity and performance can depend on a wide range of packaging and environmental conditions.
